My favourite fantasy

There are different types of fantasy (Refer CB, pg 217-224). Share one type of fantasy that you like most and provide a summary of one fantasy that comes under that category. Why do you like that fantasy? State 2 reasons.

  1. There are many types of fantasies namely animal fantasy like Charlotte's Web, toy fantasy like Pinocchio, magical fantasy and tall tales, Enchanted journey fantasies like Gulliver's Travel, Alice in wonderland, the wonderful wizard of Oz and The chronicles of Narnia, Epic or heroic fantasies like The lord of the rings, Harry porter, King Arthur and Miniature fantasy like journey to Lilliput.

Frankly speaking, I enjoyed all the types of fantasies mentioned above. However, one particular fantasy that I like most would be Enchanted journey fantasies.

Firstly, the author of the book or the movie is able to bring the reader or viewer into the world that doesn't exist, a world which only appears in our dreams, where anything can happen. It challenges our barriers of imagination, break those walls and bring us further into dreamland.

Secondly, the protagonist meets new characters along the journey and engages in a variety of adventures after which in the end, they all return back home with a sense of achievement and we, as readers feel a sense of satisfaction too!

  2. Fantasy is any story of the impossible. My favorite fantasy is “Epic or Heroic Fantasy”. What I like most is that there is always a Hero figure that comes to save the day, there is always a journey that he must take, with or without companions. It’s the strength the characters show, the courage, and determination, among other commendable attributes.
Allow me to share about David Gemmell’s – Legend. This is his first and most famous novel. If you manage to get hold of it, I encourage you to start, because one effect his books have, is that, you don’t want to put it down; everywhere I go, I bring his book, until I finish it and take up another.
Druss is a legend who's life stories are told everywhere. He has shunned a life of comfort and wealth in favour of a solitary life spent on a mountain bordering the clouds. He is sixty years old and death awaits him when he receives a request of help from the defenders of the fortress of Dros Delnoch. The city is protected by 6 walls, and if they fall, their race dies.
Why do I like this fantasy,
The character develops, you learn about Druss (the hero), how he thinks, what he does, how he fights. I love the way you learn about the character throughout the book, and beyond the 1st book. The way the auter does it, he makes you feel like you know Druss like your friend. Also, in Legend, Druss meets different characters who have different personalities and professions. They contribute to his life, encourage him, just like we need encouragement through life; they help him and add humor. Just like we do. As different as Druss is, he seems relatable.
The storyline is interesting and constantly evolving. With twists thrown in, the story is unpredictable and enjoyable; leaving you at the edge of your seat, wanting to find out what happens next. The storyline is well thought through, and doesn’t give too much or too little at a time. Even though it is obviously a fantasy, it seems almost believable.

As a child, I’m always intrigued by Animal Fantasy because I find talking animals interesting (animals don’t actually talk) and it helps me to understand what this particular animal is thinking about, its motives and character. Charlotte’s Web is one animal fantasy which most children will find interesting because it involves cutesy farm animals, pests and creepy crawlies.

  4. Frankly speaking, I enjoy a few types of fantasy and I cannot resist naming them all. Enchanted fantasy - Narnia, Epic or herioc fantasy - LOTR, Harry Potter and Modern fantasy (toy) such as Toy Story.

I like them because these stories or movies bring me into a different world. A world which doesn't exist, a world that I may fantasize about. Anything can happen in this realm and there is no right or wrong. It also allows me to be more imaginative.

  5. As a child, I have always enjoyed reading books from Enid Blyton. Her stories have never failed to intrigue me; filled with abundance of adventures and imaginations. These stories would fall under animal fantasy or magical fantasy. Secondly, I love fantasy stories from Enid Blyton because most of the time, they contain valuable moral which children in particular can learn from.

  6. Fantasy is one of my favourite genres in fiction. Some of the examples of fantasies that are currently popular are “Lord of the Rings”, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. Among the fantasies, my favourite is “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. I appreciate this fantasy as I was able to gain insights about being human and exploring the human soul as it takes me out of the real world. Secondly, the interesting plot and characters in this fantasy has really engaged me from the start till the end of the story.

  8. As a child, I loved stories written by Enid Blyton.

I like them because these stories are out of this world. It transports readers into a differnt realm where just about anything and everything can happen; allowing readers to take a break from reality. Albeit that, most of her stories carries a valuable lesson with interesting characters and series of events.

  9. I have been a fan of Toy Fantasy ever since the first series of Toy Story.

    Summary of Toy Story
The star of the proceedings is Woody, a pull-string cowboy toy belonging to a wide-eyed youngster named Andy. Whenever Andy's out of the room, Woody revels in his status as the boy's number one toy. His supremacy is challenged by a high-tech, space-ranger action figure named Buzz Lightyear, who, unlike Woody and his pals, believes that he is real and not merely a plaything. The rivalry between Woody and Buzz hilariously intensifies during the first half of the film, but when the well-being of Andy's toys is threatened by a nasty next-door neighbor kid named Sid -- whose idea of fun is feeding stuffed dolls to his snarling dog and reconstructing his own toys into hideous mutants -- Woody and Buzz join forces to save the day.

Firstly, to see the toys communicate and share a close friendship is heart-warming. The story is comical but has a meaning behind it. Secondly, it makes me treasure the toys (or rather the bears) that I have and not just ignore the old ones.

  10. I like Epic or heroic Fantasy such as Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. The plots of such stories are always stronger and adventurous. At the end of the day, the good will always win the evil forces. In it, folktale traditional is also emphasis with magic and wondrous events.

  11. My favorite type of fantasy is toy fantasy. Toys have always been the friends of many children. When I was young, I remembered playing and talking to my toys (be it dolls, toy cars or even figures)and hoping that they will come to life (oh, not at night please). So, when I get to watch shows of toy fantasy, I always wish that I can be the human character in that particular story.

Two examples of toy fantasy are Toy Story and Winnie-The-Pooh. Since Shikin has already elaborated on Toy Story, I shall focus on Winnie-The-Pooh.

The story revolves around the many adventures and problems that the characters have living in the 100-acre woods. The main character is of course Winnie the Pooh and he has many other best friends such as Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore and a human character, Christopher Robin.

The reasons why I like this toy fantasy is because of the distinctive characteristics that each character has. For example, Piglet is paranoid and timid and because of that, he constantly needs assurance from Christopher Robin and Winnie. For Tigger, he is a hyperactive tiger who loves to bounce around on his tail. With him around, there bound to be troubles. I like how the characters live in harmony in the 100-acre woods despite their differences.

  13. As a child, I enjoyed toy fantasy very much. Pinocchio is one example of a toy fantasy. It is about a mischievous wooden puppet who gains wisdom after a series of misadventures and finally is rewarded by being a real human at the end of the story.

This story is great as it has a moral to it. Although it is a fantasy, teachers can use this story to teach children not to tell lies. With a family theme, it also shows the love of a father even when his "son" is mischievous.

  14. I like all types of fantasy stories but among all, I like best – toy fantasy. I share the same liking with Shikin and Sally for the stories that fall in this category. So since they both have mentioned Toy Story and Winnie the Pooh, I will share another favourite Toy fantasy, Franklin by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark.

Franklin is a tortoise. There is a whole series of books on Franklin, for examples, Franklin wants a pet, Franklin’s secret club, Franklin goes to school etc. Franklin lives with his parents and has many friends. They are Beaver, Bear, Rabbit, Racoon, Fox, Snail and Goose. He attends school and his teacher is Mr Owl. Like Winnie the Pooh and Toy Story, Franklin is made into animated film which my daughter used to watch on TV when she was younger. She is the reason why I like toy fantasy. They are bedtime stories I read to her every night. Another reason why I like toy fantasy is the theme which is typical of children’s story that tells of family, friendship, love, forgiveness, sharing, dealing with fear and so on.

  15. I love Magical Fantasy, like the old Enid Blyton where Elves and Pixes had powers to do things or grant wishes.

This became more apparent with Harry Potter. Learning spells to help with chores, to battle against the Dark Forces, to counter against bullies, it seems so amazing, so wonderful and so desirable a skill to posses.

I often wish I would receive a letter to Hogwarts itself and see the Magical Castle with its moving staircases and talking paintings.

Even though it's not real, but magical fantasy provides an illusion, a dream into a world where everything you wanted can be made real.

  16. (The summary below was done by Christopher Shannon Marcus)

There are a variety of fantasies. These fantasies range from Adventure fantasy, Mystical fantasy to Paranormal fantasies.

An example of adventure fantasy would be "Rapunzels Revenge". For Mystical fantasy George MacDonald's "The princess and the goblin" is one that is very interesting and engaging to children. Lastly, under the category of paranormal fantasy would be Seth Grahame-Smiths, "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter". This though is not suited for children as they language may not be suitable for them and it is relatively a thick book.

However, my personal favourite type of fantasy is "Dark fantasy". One of my all time favourites is "Beowulf"

The book was then screened as a movie with partial 3D effects. It was well done with a very strong ( confusing at first ) plot. Of course there was a lot of fighting with Medieval weapons and stuff ( unsuitable for children) but generally had a good story line.

Lots of dragons, weird creatures and demons were the antagonist in the story. The protaganist also had his own set of problems where he had to question his morals.

The story has all the elements of suspense and excitement. My kind of read.

  17. I find animal fantasy fascinating. Animals are very closely related to humans' lives. Animals are pets, they do chores and so on. In animal fantasies, animals are personified and they come alive.
Many children have a natural love of animals and in stories in which animals come alive, children find it easy to relate to them.
Charlotte's Web is an animal fantasy that will intrigue children.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love animal fantasies in which animals talk and exhibit human emotions. Examples of such fantasy would be 'Madagascar', 'Horton', 'Ratatouille'.

In fact, today, animal fantasy is found most frequently in picture books for the young and kids love these books.

The first reason why I love animal fantasy is because of the humour in the story but at the same time teaching values. Second reason is that we will discover and learn about the animal behaviour through animal fantasies too.

One of the fantasy that I like most is by Enid Blyton.
Most of the stories were well-written and in every book, there is always a learning point. Not only that, it helps the reader to move out of the real world and enter into a world full of fantasies. It helps children especially to be imaginative too.

Another story that i enjoyed most is Toy Story. It is a good book to introduce to students because they can see that they toys communicate with each other and how they value friendships.

  20. I would prefer Epic or Heroic Fantasy. Under this category, my favorite movie happens to The lord of the rings.

The lord of the rings talks about a dark lord, sauron had forged one ring to gain control over other rings held by the men, elves and dwarves. Saron losses the ring during a battle and the adventure begins with all the different races battle against each other to obtain the ring.

What I like about this fantasy is the battle between the good and the evil, watching how the good plotting and uniting to battle against the evil.

Another aspect which I like about this fantasy is the history behind each characters. The author had included a long history and origins behind each characters; their location, their forefathers, the language they spoke in and their food (what they eat).

  22. I enjoy the Enchanted Fantasy such as Harry Potter, Narnia and etc. The reason why these types of fantasy stories because it brings me to a different world. Something that does not happen in our daily lives. It gives me a chances to be imaginative.

  23. Like many others, I like enchanted fantasies the most. There's something magical about such stories that pulls children and adults to like and enjoy them. These stories contain human elements that make them so believable that readers or audience get carried away and empathize with the characters and line of the story.
I personally enjoy the adventure type like LOTR, Troy, Prince of Persia, Harry Potter and many more where human chivalry, goodness and good magic triumphs over evil. In these stories, there must always be sacrifice, suffering and the herol appearing to 'lose out' to their evil counterparts at first.
Besides the adventure type I also like the ridiculously enchanting Alice in Wonderland, Narnia etc.I've never read the books but the movies were amazing. There is a purpose for such fantasy stories. Sometimes we need to take a break and escape from reality =)

  24. My favourite subgenre of fantasy would be the heroic fantasy. The idea of good triumping over evil just makes me feel good. One example would be King Arthur and the knights of the round table. There is a nobility and a bravery displayed by the knights as they protect people and especially the King and Queen. The knights always choose to do the right thing no matter the cost. This genre of Fantasy shows that there is a right and wrong in the world and not something that is subjective which is a believe that is becoming more prevalent these days. So it gives me hope when i read heroic fantasies or watch such movies!

  25. I grow up reading Enid Blyton and I love the stories which involve fairies, witches, wizards and dwarfs.

With the illustrations provided, I get excited when I read as I form the images in my mind.

  26. I like Enchanted Fantasy. I grew up with all the fairytales on snow white, sleeping beauty, cinderella, little mermaid etc. It never fails to excite me as a child to watch and read them over and over again.

I especially love the part where they use magic to triumph over evil! It was definitely attractive to a kid's formative years of learning about good and evil.

  27. I am intrigue by fantasy stories especially those which involves creatures like werewolves, gargoyles, elves, goblins, centaurs etc. I am quite freaked out by these creatures yet I find myself being drawn to them. I really enjoyed the movie Chronicles of Narnia because of the many creatures that can be found in the movie. Stories like Harry POtter and Lord of the Rings are also very interesting as the writer conjured many different creatures. Watching the movies is like seeing the book come to life. Even though the book will always be more detailed, it is still a joy to actually watch the events and happenings of the story.

  28. If I have to select one type of fantasy to mention, I would say epic or heroic fantasy is a type I prefer. One of such fantasy I can think of right now is Percy Jackson series. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, PJ and the Sea of Monsters, PJ and the Battle of the Labyrinth, PJ and the Titan’s curse, and, PJ and the Last Olympian are the books in this series I have read this year. All in all, the books tells of the adventures of Percy Jackson (son of Poseidon), a Demigod (half-blood between human and a greek god – Olympian) and his friends – Annabeth (a demigod – daughter of Athena), Grover (a semi goat who is a protector of the demigods) and some others (Luke, Thalia, Tyson etc.) who appears as the story goes. I like this fantasy because of the very nature of epic or heroic fantasy it holds – heroes pursue quests and ultimately fighting the forces of evil that threaten to overwhelm an entire civilisation. Apart from that, it weaves the Greek culture and gives an added education of Greek mythology. Also, the underlying messages such as the friendship and betrayals, perseverance and forgiveness are relative to real-life.

  29. My favourite fantasy would be Magical Fantasy, Harry Potter in particular. It has always been something that fascinates me when magic could be used to do certain things, like household chores, repairing a broken pair of spectacles, prepare a meal, all with the swish and flick of a wand.
Fantasies fuel our imagination, living for us a life we cannot live. Reading these fantasies puts us in a different world, where the unimaginable is the norm.
I like magical fantasies because I have always had a thing for magic, being able to do what normal humans cannot. Reading them allows me to escape from reality and immerse myself into the magical world.

  30. My favourite genre of fantasy is definitely Hero or Epic fantasy. We've all wanted to be a hero or be saved by a hero at least once in our lives.

Every since I was a little boy, I've read comics upon comics, all with a common theme, heroes. My favourite will definitely be the Justice League series that I've read from my Primary School days. What's there not to like about 6 superheroes fighting for the survival of humankind?

David Eddings, a prolific fantasy writer, has written some of the best series for epic fantasy. Belgariad, Mallorean and the Tamuli are just some of the series that he's written. Each series consists of 5 books and is centred around the unwilling hero, Belgarion, the chosen one. There's even the wise old sorceror who helps Belgarion fulfill his full potential as a sorceror called Belgarath. The series chronicles his journey with his trusty group of chosen croonies who would end up saving the day.

I would choose epic or heroic fantasy. My favourite is C.S. Lewis' Narnia chronicles series.

    Summary of epic/heroic fantasy:
The heroes in the story fight the forces of evil to overwhelm a whole country. It draws heavily on folktale tradition with emphasis on magic and wondrous events. Also, it is adventurous and very imaginative, sometimes even magical.

What i like about the story:
I like the way the author infuses the hero in the children. Also, it teaches children to be brave and selfless.
Secondly, i like the way it creates a whole new world of magic, and how animals can communicate and be friends with the human characters in the story..

Such things help me escape reality, and imagine myself in a whole new world

  33. I like epic or heroic fantasy the most such as the Harry Potter series and Lewis’s Narnia chronicles. The characters in the story always start up as an ordinary folk like us. Yet as the story continues, they, as ordinary folks, can manage extraordinary adventures and fight against the dark. I believe it is because we know we can’t achieve such great things in life so when we read this kind of story, it actually fulfill the desire of us wanting to rebel and achieve something great. One good example will be the Lewis’s Narnia chronicles. The characters in the story are just normal children yet they are able to enter into a ‘world’ where they can fight against the dark. I believe a lot of us would wish that we have such a wardrobe or cupboard where we teleport to another world to become a hero or heroine.

  34. I enjoy toy fantasy the most e.g. Toy story.
The main character is Woody, a pull-string cowboy toy belonging to a wide-eyed youngster named Andy. Among the toys thers is rivalry between them. But when faced with external threats, Woody and Buzz join forces to save the day. I like this story because of the heart-warming friendship among them

and also because stories about toys come to life and it makes you feel that all creation is created with a life spirit. It makes you fantasize and makes its characters become real when you can communicate to them.
I probably like such stories because I used to talk to my toys when I was a child
